Cake Beauty Takes the Cake

I ordered this awesome all purpose treatment balm from Cake Beauty a couple months ago and it’s quickly become my favorite nighttime balm– I use it on my lips and face. It smells like lemon sugar cookies, which is always a bonus. The only drawback is they took a long time to ship my order (Cake is a Canadian company, but still)– I think it took about a month to get to me.

For $24 you get a generous amount of balm, it would easily last you a year. It also doubles as a subtle foody fragrance if you dab some on your wrists.

Their description:

I’ll take you downtown

A few months ago a friend and I took the Red Line subway from Hollywood to downtown LA for the first time. Yes, it’s true…no one in LA walks or takes the subway for the most part. But maybe they should, because it’s relatively painless and $1.25 each way. We went to the Fashion District, home to fabric stores, mom and pop storefronts, designer showrooms, hole in the wall restaurants, and much more.

With the hassle of driving out of our hands, we were able to enjoy our trip down south a bit more. We also found a food court offering food from every corner of the world it seemed– Hawaiian BBQ, Middle Eastern, pho, Mexican, you name it.

I don’t know if I could ever live downtown, though they are revitalizing the area and restoring beautiful art deco buildings. It lacks the energy of NYC or even Hollywood at night. The fancy new lofts are probably too yuppie for my tastes. Skid row is still a reality. Something just isn’t there yet. But it’s worth visiting…during the daytime.

Free People opens in Los Angeles

I actually haven’t been to Free People yet, but apparently it’s like Urban Outfitter’s cool kid sister. I’ll definitely have to stop by.

LA Earthquake

We had a 5.4 quake here in Los Angeles a couple hours ago– at first it felt like the upstairs neighbors were moving some heavy duty furniture, but I quickly realized the entire apartment was shaking. Nothing fell over, no damage was done…A tad unsettling but nothing major.

Living in the hills of Hollywood, there’s always some catastrophe waiting in the wings– fires, quakes, landslides…I guess it comes with the territory!

Hotel Chelsea Bound

I just finalized a trip to Manhattan and booked a room at the legendary Hotel Chelsea, the place where Bob Dylan wrote songs, Dylan Thomas died, where Sid stabbed Nancy. I wonder what’s in store for me there.

Camera Shy

I recently purchased the Diana and Holga cameras from UrbanOutfitters.com, hoping to snap a few cool pictures like the images I’ve come across on Flickr and a few other photography sites. Since I’m so used to the instant gratification, film-less digital camera, I have only taken a few test shots on the Holga. I guess I’m intimidated by possibly taking a bunch of awesome shots and then realizing I’ve left the lens cap on or something. But that doesn’t stop me from admiring each and every Lomo camera Urban carries– now it’s just a matter of testing the film camera waters.

Marc Jacobs Pear: Peary Nice

I’m slightly obsessed with Marc Jacobs, and I’ve been having a love affair with his Pear splash for a couple months. It’s the perfect summer scent– light and fruity, yet a hint of lusty musk that is great for a summer evening.

At first I was hesitant to try a pear scent– I’m not particularly fond of the fruit. So I was quite surprised when I sampled the fragrance and realized it was multi-dimensional.

Sephora’s description puts it best:

Marc Jacobs Pear Splash captures the sweet nectar of summer. Deliciously fresh and ripe, it tempts the senses with its savory aroma. Uniquely delectable, pear is a delicious summer indulgence to enjoy. The fruity, woody fragrance opens with the tantalizing aroma of fresh, ripe pear invigorated with bergamot and lemon zest. The heart of juniper, gin accord, and freesia imparts a sweet richness. Musk, teakwood, and a soft amber round out the balance of notes with smooth softness and warm sensuality.

Marc Jacobs contemplates the refreshing power of beauty in this new limited-edition collection of body splashes softly scented in chilled sorbet flavors. Deliciously cooling, Marc Jacobs Splashes inspire us to enjoy life’s simple pleasures. Light enough to splash or spray lavishly all over the body, the crisp scent awakens the senses and tempts the palate.

Notes:
Pear, Freesia, Teakwood.
Style:
Sweet. Sparkling. Refreshing.

I’ve been hearing some buzz about Marc’s new Gardenia scent, so I think that’s next on my list.
